How to Get More Leads for a Car Dealership Without a Bigger Budget

Lead generationDavid Koznicov12 min read

Where enquiries come from, why so many are lost after the click, and the checks I run on every dealership to get more buyers from the ad budget it already spends.

How to get more leads for a car dealership? Fix what happens to the enquiries you already pay for. Put your stock on your own website, clean up the ad account, reply within minutes and follow up with every buyer who goes quiet. Once those four work, a bigger budget has somewhere useful to go.

What counts as a car dealership lead?

For those who don't know: a lead is a person who has told you they might buy. A website form, a phone call, a WhatsApp message, a portal message, a test drive booking.

A click is not a lead. If your agency report is full of impressions and click-through rates, ask for one number instead: enquiries per month, by source.

Then work out your cost per lead. Take the ad spend for the month and divide it by the enquiries that came from ads that month. Every check in this guide is measured against that number.

On a first call I ask which channels you advertise on, what one enquiry costs, how many you get a month and how fast the first reply goes out. If you cannot answer those in a minute, start there.

Google's vehicle ads are not available everywhere. According to Google Merchant Center Help, they are fully released in a handful of countries and in beta in several European markets, so check yours first.

AI search is new, but buyers already use it. In the US, Cox Automotive's Car Buyer Journey study found that 19% of all buyers and 25% of new-vehicle buyers used AI websites or AI-generated overviews while shopping.

The page on car dealership lead generation shows how I run these channels for dealers and importers.

Why your website decides how many enquiries you get

Every channel sends people to your website, and that is where a lot of paid clicks die.

Is the stock on your own site?

Many dealers show stock through a listing platform's iframe. For those who don't know: an iframe is a window that shows another website inside yours. The cars look like yours, but they live on the platform. Search engines index the platform's pages, and you cannot build your own ad feed or stock email from them.

Moving the stock onto your own site unlocks most of this guide.

What does the first screen say on a phone?

Open your homepage on your phone and read the first screen as a stranger would. Can you see what this dealership sells, where, a car, a price and a button?

A slideshow and a manufacturer banner answer none of that. Google also uses the mobile version of a site for indexing and ranking, so the phone version counts twice.

Where do the forms go, and who watches the visits?

Every form should land in your CRM and your email list, with the source attached. Loose emails in a shared inbox get answered late.

Then watch real visits. Microsoft Clarity lets you replay sessions on your site and see where people give up.

If the site itself is the problem, here is how I build websites for car dealerships.

How to get more leads for a car dealership from Google Ads

  1. Open Change history. The change history tool shows every edit from the past two years and who made it. If the last change was months ago, nobody is running the account.
  2. Open the search terms report. The search terms report shows the actual searches behind your clicks, and you can add irrelevant ones as negative keywords from there. Job searches, owner's manuals and spare parts are the usual suspects.
  3. Fix the structure. I start by putting the existing inventory in front of the right audience, then build demand for each service: import, service, anything else you sell.
  4. Count enquiries as conversions. Forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks, never page views.
  5. Run a week, then talk about budget. The minimum depends on the country and the cost per click.
Pro tip: Before you raise a Google Ads budget, check the date of the last change in Change history and scroll through thirty days of search terms. If you find searches you would never pay for, fix those first, because more budget only buys more of them.

How to turn your stock into ads and emails

Once the stock lives on your own site, one inventory feeds every channel.

→ Meta. You set up a catalogue for automotive inventory ads once, and Meta builds ads from your cars.

→ Google. The same stock goes to Google Merchant Center as a feed, for vehicle ads where available and Performance Max with your actual cars.

→ Email. New arrivals go into a monthly stock email, built from the same inventory.

I did exactly this for a European dealership. I moved their stock from a third-party iframe onto their own site, and the same inventory now feeds their Meta ads, Google Merchant Center and the monthly new-stock email. Nobody types a car in twice.

Why reply speed decides how many enquiries become buyers

A buyer who sends an enquiry is usually looking at more than one car, and often at more than one dealer. The first useful reply sets the tone.

Here's a simple way to check this for your dealership:

  1. Send an enquiry to your own website from a private email address, on a Saturday evening.
  2. Note when the first real answer arrives. The automatic "we have received your message" does not count.

If it arrives on Monday, every weekend enquiry had a day and a half to find someone faster. More in dealership lead response time.

A good reply answers the buyer's question and asks a few of your own: how soon, trade-in or not, how they want to pay. The answers tell sales who to call first. When a buyer does not answer, a reminder goes out after 48 hours and another after five days.

This is the system behind AI lead response for car dealerships, and you can watch it reply on the live test drive demo.

How to get leads from customers you already sold to

Pull the sales from three years ago. Count how many of those buyers you have contacted since.

If the answer is close to zero, that is where your cheapest leads are. Those people already trust you, and their car is getting older.

Under EU rules you can usually email your own customers about similar products and services without fresh consent, as long as they can object in every message. That is the existing-customer exception in Article 13(2) of the ePrivacy Directive. Check how your country applies it.

What to send:

  • Service reminders and offers from the rest of the business: car wash, tyres, extras.
  • A Google review request a few days after the handover.
  • A note when a car that fits them comes into stock.
  • A win-back email to customers who stopped coming to your service department.

Google says more reviews and helpful replies can help a business stand out in local results. Ask every buyer, and never offer a gift for a review: Google's policy on rating manipulation prohibits incentives and asking only happy customers.

How to measure leads: the numbers worth tracking

These are the numbers I record for every client, every month. Without them, nobody can say whether leads went up or down.

Number

How to measure it

Why it matters

Enquiries by source

CRM, source saved on every lead

Shows which channel brings buyers

Cost per lead

Ad spend divided by enquiries from ads

The baseline for budget decisions

Time to first reply

Enquiry timestamp vs first real answer

The quickest number to improve

Qualified leads

Leads that answered the qualifying questions

Tells sales who to call first

Enquiry to test drive

Test drives divided by enquiries

Shows whether follow-up works

Enquiry to sale

Cars sold divided by enquiries, per source

The number that pays the bills

New Google reviews

Count per month

Local visibility and trust

Before changing anything, record the last three months. That is your baseline, and every month after is compared with your own numbers.

Mistakes that cost dealerships enquiries

  • Raising the budget before fixing the reply time. You buy more enquiries and lose more of them.
  • Showing stock only through a listing platform's iframe.
  • Counting clicks and calling them leads.
  • One follow-up email, then silence.
  • A CRM so complicated that sales keeps the real list in a notebook.
  • One shared inbox that nobody owns at the weekend.

How DKMEDIA gets more leads for a car dealership

I work as an outside partner for dealerships and importers. One person on your side approves ideas, and we talk by email or WhatsApp.

We start with a call where I tell you what I see in your digital presence. My answer to how to get more leads for a car dealership is always the same order: demand first, then the website, then the automations, one fix after another.

For demand I mainly run Google Search, Google Shopping with your vehicles once the stock is on your site, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Meta. You pay the ad spend directly to the platforms.

For response, an agent connected to your inbox replies to every enquiry within minutes, asks the qualifying questions we chose together and sends hot leads to sales. For the first fourteen days every reply is a draft your team checks.

Before we switch anything on, I record your last three months. There is no minimum term: the contract can end at the end of any month.

FAQ

What is a good cost per lead for a car dealership?

It depends on the country, the make and the channel, so a figure from another market tells you little. Record your own cost per lead for the last three months and use it as the baseline to beat.

Is it better to get leads from listing portals or from my own website?

Portals bring buyers who compare you with every other dealer on the page. Your own website lets you own the data and run ads from your own stock. Using both is fine, as long as every enquiry ends up in your own CRM.

How fast should a dealership reply to an online enquiry?

Within minutes, including evenings and weekends. An automatic reply that answers the question and asks a few qualifying questions keeps the conversation open until sales can call.

Can I email customers who bought a car from me years ago?

In the EU you can usually email existing customers about similar products and services under the ePrivacy existing-customer exception, as long as every message lets them object. National rules differ in detail, so check yours.

How to get more leads for a car dealership without a bigger ad budget?

Fix the basics first, and raise the budget only after they work. If the account is unmanaged or enquiries wait for hours, more budget buys more of the same problem.
