Google Ads for car dealerships: structure, negatives and budget

Lead generationDavid Koznicov12 min read

Search by model family, Performance Max and vehicle ads where Google offers them in the EU, a negative keyword list you can paste today, and tracking that counts buyers.

Google Ads for car dealerships work best with a small, readable structure: Search campaigns split by model family, a brand campaign, Performance Max fed by your stock where vehicle ads are available, and Demand Gen for building interest. Behind that sits a shared negative keyword list that stops you paying for job seekers, parts buyers and people looking for the owner's manual. Add tracking that sends qualified enquiries back to Google, and a budget set per campaign, and the account starts telling you where the buyers come from.

What does Google Ads for car dealerships include?

A dealership needs four Google campaign types, each with a different job.

Conversion tracking, assets, a vehicle feed where eligible

Demand Gen

YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps, Display

Building interest before people search

Strong images and video, an audience

For those who don't know: Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that runs across YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign. You give it goals, assets and signals, and Google decides where the ads show.

Start with Search and brand, which catch people who already want a car. Add Performance Max and Demand Gen once tracking works, because both rely on conversion data.

How to structure Search campaigns by model family

One campaign per model family, for example used compact SUVs, used estates, vans, and new models of the make you sell. Inside each campaign, one ad group per model.

That gives every family its own budget, ads and landing page, so you can see which family brings enquiries and move money the same day.

A few rules I follow:

  1. Every campaign lands on the page for that family, with live stock, a price range and one short form. Never the homepage.
  2. Start with phrase and exact match on model names and buying terms. Google's match type guide explains that exact match gives you the most control over who sees your ad.
  3. Use broad match only once the account has conversion data and the negative list below is in place. Broad match can show your ad on searches that do not contain the direct meaning of your keyword.
  4. Write ads that name the model, the stock and the dealership location. A buyer searching "used Tiguan" wants to see Tiguan in the ad.

Add a small brand campaign next to these, so a competitor bidding on your name does not sit above you when a past customer searches for you.

Performance Max and vehicle ads: what is available in the EU?

Vehicle ads are Google's format built for dealers. According to Google's vehicle ads overview, they show a car's image with make, model, price, mileage and the dealer's name, and a click goes to that car's page on your site. They run in Performance Max, from a vehicle feed uploaded to Google Merchant Center.

Availability, as Google lists it in September 2026:

  • Fully released: Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States.
  • Open beta: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. You check the prerequisites and submit a contact form before enabling it.
  • Everywhere else, Slovenia and Croatia included: closed beta, only with approval from a Google sales representative.

Vehicle ads support new and used passenger vehicles from dealers and other businesses, and they optimise for both online leads and store visits.

If vehicle ads are not open in your country, Performance Max still works with image, video and text assets pointed at your model family pages. The feed matters less there, and the conversion goal matters more. If it can only see page views, it will find you page views.

Pro tip: Build one asset group per model family in Performance Max, with that family's page as the final URL. It keeps the reporting readable and stops a van buyer landing on your SUV page.

When does Demand Gen make sense for a dealership?

Demand Gen campaigns run on YouTube (including Shorts), Discover, Gmail, Maps and the Display Network. They reach people before they search, much like Meta does.

For a dealer, Demand Gen suits three jobs:

  • A new model arriving that people do not search for by name yet.
  • Service and after-sales, such as seasonal tyre changes, for people in your area.
  • Video walkarounds of the stock, shown to people interested in cars.

It is the last campaign I add. It needs good video and images, and I judge it on enquiries and store visits over a few weeks.

The negative keyword list every dealership needs

For those who don't know: negative keywords stop your ads from showing for searches that contain them. Without them, a dealership pays for searches like "golf 7 owners manual pdf", "car sales jobs" or "rear light bulb".

One detail changes how you build the list. Google states that negative keywords do not match close variants. If you exclude "job", you can still show for "jobs". So add singular, plural and common misspellings yourself.

Put these in a shared list at account level, then add your own.

Category

Example negatives

Why exclude them

Jobs and careers

job, jobs, career, careers, vacancy, salary, hiring, apprenticeship, internship

People looking for work

Parts and repair

parts, spare, spares, bulb, bulbs, tyre, tyres, tire, tires, brake, brakes, wiper, battery, bumper, mirror, fault code

Parts buyers and DIY repairs

Manuals and how-to

manual, manuals, pdf, handbook, "how to", reset, fuse, fuses, wiring, diagram, torque

Owners looking for information

Private sale and scrap

"private seller", "for parts", scrap, salvage, damaged, "spares or repair", free

Buyers who want to avoid a dealer

Rental and subscriptions

Only if you do not offer them

Research content

review, reviews, forum, reddit, wiki, youtube, "common problems"

Mostly reading, rarely buying

Stock you cannot sell

models and makes you never have in stock

Clicks you cannot turn into a sale

Three notes before you paste.

  1. Translate the list into the language your buyers search in. A Slovenian account needs "zaposlitev", "rezervni deli", "navodila" and "najem" as well as the English words.
  2. Be careful with review terms. Some dealers want buyers who compare models, so check your own search terms first.
  3. For an importer, registration, homologation, customs and "import duty" may be negatives, unless you have a page that answers them and want those enquiries.

Account-level negatives also apply to Performance Max, and Google allows negative keywords per Performance Max campaign. They affect Search and Shopping inventory only.

How to track Google Ads for car dealerships in the EU

Everything above depends on Google knowing which clicks became enquiries, and which enquiries became buyers.

Step 1: conversions that mean something

Track the form submission, the call from the website and the WhatsApp click as separate conversions, with the enquiry as the primary goal.

In the EEA, Google requires advertisers to collect consent and pass it on through consent mode for personalisation and measurement. Google warns that without it, it cannot verify consent choices and you may lose data. Your cookie banner and your Google tag need to talk to each other.

Step 3: send the sale back

Enhanced conversions for leads lets you import what happened after the enquiry. When a lead becomes a customer in your CRM, you send it back to Google with the same hashed email the form collected. Google matches it to the ad click, and bidding can learn from the enquiries that turned into test drives and sales.

That last step needs a CRM that sales actually uses. If the sales team keeps leads in their heads and in a notebook, there is nothing to send back.

How to set the budget for Google Ads for car dealerships

There is no honest default number, because a click costs different amounts by country, make and region. What I can give you is the structure:

  1. One budget per campaign, so a family that brings enquiries can get more.
  2. The brand campaign gets a small budget. It should never run out.
  3. Search campaigns get most of the money at the start, because they reach people who are already looking.
  4. Performance Max and Demand Gen get budget once tracking works and Search has shown what an enquiry costs.

Know how Google spends it. Your average daily budget is an average: on a single day Google can spend up to twice the amount, and over a month it charges no more than 30.4 times the daily budget for most campaigns. A spike on a Tuesday is normal.

Run the first week, look at cost per enquiry per campaign, then set the real budget.

Weekly checks that keep the account clean

Google Ads for car dealerships drift if nobody looks. These are the checks I run every week.

  1. Open Insights and reports, then the search terms report, and sort by cost.
  2. Read the most expensive searches. Anything you would refuse to pay for out loud goes into the negative list.
  3. Check that every enabled campaign still points at a page with live stock.
  4. Compare the enquiries Google reports with the enquiries in your CRM.
  5. Look at the time from enquiry to first reply. Clicks you paid for are wasted if the answer comes on Monday.

How DKMEDIA approaches Google Ads for dealers

Google Search is the main lead generation channel I use for dealers, with Performance Max and Demand Gen next to it. The first job is always the structure: the stock in front of the people searching for it, then demand for the other things a dealer sells, such as import, service or anything else that needs its own enquiries.

The stock has to live on the dealer's own site for any of this to work well. For one European dealership I moved the stock from a third-party iframe onto their own website, and that stock now feeds Google Merchant Center as well as their Meta ads. Enquiries go into the CRM with their source, tracked server-side, so we can see which campaign brought which buyer. If there is no CRM that sales enjoys using, we build a simple CRM for car dealerships.

Dealers pay their ad spend directly to Google. Before we start, I record the last three months as a baseline, and every month after is compared with it. Every enquiry also gets an answer within five minutes from our AI lead response, so the clicks are not wasted over the weekend. The full channel picture is on the dealership lead generation page.

FAQ

Do Google Ads work for car dealerships?

Yes, when the account is split by model family, sends each click to a page with live stock, and blocks irrelevant searches. How fast the enquiry gets an answer often decides the result.

Are vehicle ads available in Slovenia?

Not openly as of September 2026. Google lists vehicle ads as fully released in Australia, Canada, Japan and the US, and in open beta in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK. Other countries are in closed beta, which requires approval from a Google sales representative.

What negative keywords should a car dealership use?

Start with jobs, parts and repair, manuals, private sale and scrap, rental you do not offer, and models you never stock. Negative keywords do not match close variants, so add plurals and misspellings, and translate the list into your buyers' language.

Is Performance Max good for Google Ads for car dealerships?

It can be, once conversion tracking works and it has clear goals and model family pages. Without good conversion data it optimises for whatever it can see.

How much should a dealership spend on Google Ads?

It depends on the country, the make and local competition. Set a budget per campaign, run it for a week, then decide from the real cost per enquiry.
