ChatGPT ads for car dealerships: what is live in Europe now
OpenAI opened self-serve ChatGPT ads in 31 European markets in August 2026. What a dealer can buy today, how it works, and the AI search work that pays off either way.
ChatGPT ads for car dealerships became something you can actually buy in Europe on 31 August 2026, when OpenAI opened self-serve access to its Ads Manager in 31 European markets, Slovenia, Austria and Croatia included. The ad is a small labelled card under a ChatGPT answer, matched to the conversation with no keywords to bid on, and billed per impression or per click. It is still a beta with no published benchmarks, so the part a dealer can rely on today is making sure the dealership gets named in AI answers at all, in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.

What are ChatGPT ads for car dealerships?
For those who don't know: OpenAI started testing ads inside ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026. The ad appears below a ChatGPT response, and each one has six parts: advertiser name, favicon, a title, a short description, an image and a landing page.
For a dealership that means one card, under an answer, with your name on it and a link to a page on your site. OpenAI states that ads are labelled, kept separate from the answer, and that advertisers cannot shape or rank what ChatGPT says.
The buyer who sees it is usually in the middle of a decision. They are comparing two SUVs, asking what a hybrid costs to run, or checking which family car fits three child seats. That sits earlier than a Google search for your dealership name, and it should be judged like that.
Where can a dealership run ChatGPT ads in September 2026?
This changed fast, so here is the order of events from OpenAI's own pages.
- February 2026: test starts in the US, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu get no ads.
- Spring and summer 2026: the pilot spreads to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, then to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
- 18 August 2026: OpenAI announces 31 European markets, first through its own sales team, agencies and technology partners.
- 31 August 2026: self-serve access through Ads Manager opens in those 31 markets.
The Ads Manager availability list shows Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Italy as available. One detail matters for groups with several companies: the legal entity that advertises and gets billed has to be based in a listed country.
For a dealer in any of those countries, that means you can open an account and run a test today.
How do ChatGPT ads work: format, targeting and pricing
The mechanics are closer to Meta than to Google Search, and the words are new, so here they are in plain terms.
Targeting: conversations and context hints
There are no keywords to bid on. According to OpenAI's basics for advertisers, the system looks at the context and intent of the current conversation, your landing page, your title and copy, and context hints you write at ad group level.
For those who don't know: a context hint is a short description of the conversations where your ad could help. "Families comparing seven-seat SUVs" is a context hint. OpenAI says plainly that hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery.
Pricing: views, clicks or conversions
You choose Views (billed per thousand impressions), Clicks (billed per click), or Conversions, where the system optimises for a conversion event. With click billing on a conversion campaign, you still pay per valid click. OpenAI's own guidance is to start click campaigns with a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars per click, and it runs a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.
Product feeds
OpenAI also offers campaigns built from product feeds. They are written for retail catalogues, targeting is country-level only, and uploaded items expire after two weeks unless the feed refreshes from a hosted URL. I have not seen OpenAI confirm that a vehicle feed fits its specification, so I would ask before planning a stock campaign around it.
How to set up ChatGPT ads for car dealerships step by step
Here is the order I would follow for a first test.
- Sign up at ads.openai.com with the legal entity that will pay, and complete account verification.
- Pick one model family or one service to test, for example used family SUVs, or your service department.
- Build or choose the landing page for exactly that: live stock for the family, price range, one short form. OpenAI's own ad guidance says to link the most relevant page and avoid the generic homepage.
- Check that the page lets OpenAI's crawlers in. OAI-AdsBot is required for ad review, and OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot too. Its crawler guidance for advertisers lists robots.txt, firewalls and CAPTCHAs as the usual blockers.
- Write several ads per offer, each with a different angle. One about space for a family, one about running costs, one about the warranty.
- Write three to five context hints per ad group, in the words a buyer would use in a conversation.
- Add UTM parameters to every landing page URL, so the traffic shows up in your own analytics.
- Set a small daily budget and a Clicks campaign, then leave it running long enough to collect real enquiries.
Pro tip: Before you launch, ask ChatGPT the question your buyer would ask, in your own language, and read the answer. If the answer is about models you do not stock, your context hints need to be narrower.
How to measure a ChatGPT ads test
ChatGPT ads report impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM and conversions. For conversions you set up the OpenAI Pixel or the Conversions API, both listed in the European launch post.
A few things to know before you judge the numbers:
- Spend can show up with a delay of seven to eight hours, so a zero in the morning does not mean nothing was charged.
- OpenAI's ads FAQ says there are no performance benchmarks yet, across advertisers, industries or campaign types.
- A click is worth nothing until someone answers the enquiry it produces.
That last point is where most dealership budgets leak, on every channel. The enquiry from a ChatGPT card lands in the same inbox as the one from Google. If it waits until Monday, the test measures your reply time, and the ad gets the blame. Our guide to dealership lead response time covers what to fix there first.
How to get your dealership named in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude
Ads are one half of this. The other half costs nothing per click: being named in the answer itself when a buyer asks an assistant about dealers of your make in your region.
Each platform documents how its search crawler works, and each says roughly the same thing.
- ChatGPT: OpenAI's crawler documentation says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
- Perplexity: its bot documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to appear in its results.
- Google: for AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says there are no extra requirements. The page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in normal Search.
- Claude: Anthropic explains that blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site's visibility in Claude's search results.
Gemini is the one where I would simply test by hand. Ask it the same buyer questions and see who it names.
The practical point for dealers is stock. If your cars are shown through an iframe from a listing portal, the crawlers index the portal's pages. The assistant then names the portal, or the dealer next door whose stock sits on its own site. That is also why we build dealership websites with the stock entered on the dealer's own domain.
AI search visibility checklist for dealers
Run this once a quarter. None of it needs an ad budget.
Check | How to do it | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
Crawlers allowed | Open yoursite.com/robots.txt | No block on OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot or Googlebot |
Firewall and bot protection | Ask whoever runs your hosting or Cloudflare | AI search crawlers are not challenged or blocked |
Stock on your own domain | Open a vehicle page and check the address bar | Your domain, one page per car |
Indexed in Google and Bing | Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools | Vehicle and model pages are indexed |
Named in answers | Ask each assistant "best [make] dealer in [region]" | Your dealership appears, with correct details |
Facts consistent | Compare your site, Google Business Profile and portals | Same name, address, hours and phone |
If you only do one row this week, do the last but one. It takes two minutes and tells you where you stand.
Mistakes to avoid with ChatGPT ads for car dealerships
- Sending the ad to the homepage. The buyer was talking about a specific kind of car, and the page has to continue that conversation.
- Blocking the crawler you are paying to be reviewed by. A security rule that stops OAI-AdsBot means the ad cannot pass review.
- Judging it against Google Search. The buyer is earlier in the decision, so compare it with Meta prospecting, and look at enquiries and test drives booked.
- Running it with no tracking. Without UTM parameters and a conversion event, you cannot tell a good week from a lucky one.
- Treating ChatGPT ads for car dealerships as a replacement for AI visibility. A buyer who scrolls past the card still reads the answer above it.
- Scaling during the beta. OpenAI's FAQ says delivery and spend can fluctuate while it changes the system.
How DKMEDIA approaches ChatGPT ads and AI visibility
I test new channels early, and ChatGPT is one some of our clients already want to be on. The order is always the same, though: foundations first. That means stock on the client's own site, fast pages, tracking that works, and enquiries answered quickly. Our monthly partnership includes AI visibility, so a dealer does not get left behind while the tools change every few weeks.
On the website side, every site we build gets technical SEO for Google, Bing and AI search, plus Cloudflare security. That combination needs one check people forget: making sure the security layer is not blocking the AI crawlers. On the enquiry side, our AI lead response replies to a new enquiry within five minutes with a few qualifying questions, and runs as drafts for the first fourteen days before anything goes out automatically.
When a paid ChatGPT test makes sense for a client, it runs next to Google and Meta, on one model family, with its own landing page and its own tracking. The Five Gears System is how we decide what comes first.

FAQ
Are ChatGPT ads available in Slovenia?
Yes. OpenAI's Ads Manager availability list shows Slovenia as available for self-serve since the European rollout on 31 August 2026. The legal entity that advertises and pays must be based in a listed country.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost for a car dealership?
You set your own daily or total budget. Campaigns are billed per thousand impressions or per valid click, and OpenAI suggests starting click campaigns with a maximum bid of 3 to 5 US dollars.
Do ChatGPT ads for car dealerships change what ChatGPT recommends?
No. OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter answers. Being named in the answer itself depends on your website and how visible it is to the AI crawlers.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans do not see ads, and neither do accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18.
How do I get my dealership recommended by ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and in your firewall, keep your stock on your own domain, and make sure your pages are indexed. Then ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and check whether you are named.
